Sawnee Foundation Awards $52,000 in Scholarships to Thirteen (13) Outstanding Students

The Sawnee Electric Membership Foundation (Foundation) recently awarded thirteen (13) local seniors each with a $4,000 scholarship. The scholarship recipients were honored at a reception held at Sawnee EMC on April 22, 2014, and they were:

“It is such a privilege for the Foundation to be able to assist these students in furthering their education.” states Blake House, Vice President of Member Services at Sawnee EMC. “The Foundation Youth Scholarship program is a shining example of what the Foundation and Sawnee EMC are all about; a commitment to being a partner and friend in the communities we serve.”

The funding for the scholarship program is derived from unclaimed funds from Sawnee EMC, which is separate and apart from the funds that the Foundation distributes to charitable organizations. In the past nine (9) years, the Sawnee Electric Membership Foundation (Foundation) has awarded $311,000 in scholarships to ninety-nine (99) exceptional high schools seniors within Sawnee EMC’s seven-county service area.

“Supporting those in need in our communities, and helping these outstanding students continue their education is a key part of meeting the Foundation’s core mission” states Mr. Jerry Burum, Chairman of the Foundation’s Board.

About Sawnee Electric Membership Foundation

The Sawnee Electric Membership Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) organization and exists to assist charitable organizations in the communities served by Sawnee EMC. Through the Foundation, participating members voluntarily donate one cent at a time by ‘rounding’ up their Sawnee EMC energy bill to the next highest dollar. Since its inception in April 2003, the Sawnee Foundation has donated over $1,559,308.00 to local charitable organizations, “Bright Ideas” educational projects and youth scholarships.
